Teen stress is extremely common. Often times it may appear that teenagers don't have a care in the world, but more often than not teens are stressed in today's demanding world. Teenagers experience stress for very different reasons than an adult or younger child does. There are different types of pressures on people at this age, but there are ways to realize when stress is becoming too much and take control of it.

What are some of the pressures today’s teenagers face?

Today's teenagers face similar problems to teenagers of the past, but there are many differences.

  • School
  • Family issues
  • Trying to fit in
  • Rebelling
  • Fears of the future
  • Graduation
  • Choosing a college
  • Moving away from home
  • Extracurricular activities

What are some signs that a teen may be experiencing stress?

Identifying stress in teens early is essential to fixing it before it gets out of control. Some teens may not feel comfortable going to their parents or others to talk about their problems. Some teens may not even realize the feelings they have are because of stress.

Some of the symptoms that may show can be:

  • Headaches
  • Stomachs
  • Nervousness / Anxiety
  • Pretending to be sick to miss school
  • Lack of concentration
  • Drop in grades
  • Using drugs or alcohol
  • Angry outbursts
  • Weight change
  • Other symptoms of stress



So how can a teenager reduce stress?

Many of the ways a teen can use to reduce stress are very similar to how anyone at any age can reduce stress. It is important to get a help. Teens don't need to deal with stress alone. Often time talking about it with a friend or a family member, or even a stranger such as counselor can really be a help.

It is also important to keep in mind that these stresses will pass. Teenage years won't last forever and quicker than you think all the teen stress will be a distant memory. Things will always work out in the end! Don't spend your life worrying about things.Teens

  • Reduce the amount of daily activities
  • Feel proud of accomplishments

  • Spend enough time doing homework and preparing for exams

  • Learn easy stress management techniques



What can parents do to help teen stress?

Parents can be a big help in reducing stress in a teen's life. Remember not to put too much pressure on them and be there to work through their problems. Parent's should let their children know they can talk to them when they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
  • Be understanding to the pressures your teens face.
  • Be open and available to talking with them.
  • Help your teen identify their stress causes and find ways to help them.
  • Help them boost their self-esteem.
  • Teach them easy stress management techniques.


Teens face many pressures today, but with the right tools they can manage their stress and make it through these tough years.
