What are some of the causes of stress among college students?

College

What should I major in? What classes should I take? Where Should I live? How Am I going to pay for it all? When am I going to find time to do all this work? These are hard questions that every college student faces and are many times at the root of stress among college students.

There are a wide variety of stressful things a college student will experience. Often it is not one single thing that will cause stress, but rather a whole gamut of things. Just think about it. You have an exam in one class tomorrow morning, a report due in another in two days and your friends want you to go to a party. What’s a college student to do?

Often one of the reasons college is so stressful is because it’s the first time a young person is away from home.

Here are some of the potential causes of stress among college students:

  • Classes
  • Exams
  • Homework
  • Choosing a major
  • Friends and social life
  • Being away from home
  • Growing up
  • Living on your own

What can I do to feel less frazzled?

The good news is that college doesn’t have to be as stressful as it could be. Keep in mind these are only a small set of years in your long life, so enjoy them and make the most of them. In a few years you will have a whole set of completely different stressors to deal with…

Here are some of the things you can do to control you stress:

Stay Organized
Buy yourself a calendar that you can carry in your backpack (such as an at-a-glance) and write all your assignments, exams, and anything else on there that you need to keep track of. Do it at the beginning of the semester and keep it updated if there are any changes. Check it everyday.

That way you can judge the workload you have coming up, as well as when there is a holiday from school! This will help you stay on top of things so you can begin working on things with enough time in advance.

Be Prepared
Begin studying for exams and working on assignments with enough time in advance so there is not a last minute rush to get it done. Work with others in your class to form study groups. Often times if you don’t understand something your peers may be able to explain it in a different way from your professor, helping you better understand it.

Have Fun
Don’t spend all your time studying and sitting in class. Have some fun too! Meet new people and try new things. College doesn’t have to only be about book learning, it can also be learning about yourself and who you are.

Balance What You Do
On the other side of things -- don’t spend all your time partying. It’s ok to do this in moderation but make sure you are spending enough time on your schooling.

Major in Something You Enjoy
Don’t major in something just because you think it will get you a good job or because someone tells you to. If you don’t enjoy the classes, then that probably isn’t the field for you. Think about how much you are going to hate it when you are working at a job if you already hate learning about it now. Find something in which you are really interested and passionate about. That will help you now and in the job world. Besides, not many people end up working in the field they got a degree in anyway. Find something you enjoy and stick with it.

Try to Find a Paid Internship in Your Field
An internship can be a great way to gain real world experience, and if it’s a paid internship it can help you bay your bills. Often times internships can lead to full time jobs in the summers or when you graduate.

Take Care of Yourself
There can be so many things going on that you forget to take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and stay hydrated. Make sure you take care of your health. Take a little time each day to practice a stress reducing activity. Click here for some easy stress reduction ideas.

So as you can see, college doesn’t have to be that stressful. Just arm yourself with the tools to enjoy the time there. Stress among college students can become a thing of the past.
