Pets and Stress

You may have heard about pets and stress management before, but the truth is pets really do help reduce stress. If you don’t already have one, go to your local animal shelter and adopt a furry companion. Not only will you be saving a life, you will also be relieving your stress. This can be a great way to relax. Imagine playing fetch with your dog or petting your cat while sipping some tea. A dog can also be a great exercise buddy.

Just be sure you can handle a pet. While they can be a great addition to your family, they are added responsibility. You have to care for, feed and exercise them. So if you do not have the money or time, or the thought of taking care of an animal does not appeal to you, then this option is not for you! It is a long–term commitment.

Benefits of owning a pet:

  • Studies have shown that pets reduce stress
  • Pets reduce blood pressure
  • Pets reduce loneliness
  • Pets provide companionship
  • Pets are someone to snuggle with
  • Pets are someone to play with
  • Pets are someone to laugh at
  • Dogs tend to increase activity level of their owners

For those of you who don’t want a dog or cat running around the house, studies have also shown that having an aquarium can have the same effect. Imagine the calming effect of watching an underwater world.

So if you decide that this is a good option for you please go to your local animal shelter and save a life!
