How to Delegate Tasks and Reduce Your Stress

DelegateLearning how to delegate tasks both at home and at work can be a great way to reduce your stress. Your stress levels will skyrocket if you are overloaded with tasks that could be passed on to someone else.

The first step is to find out why you are not delegating your work. Do you think you could do it better than someone else? Often times this is not the case and you will never know until you let someone else have a chance at it.

When you delegate:

  • Choose the right person for the job. Make sure they have time to do the task and they are best suited for it.
  • Give clear instructions on what should be done and what you expect to make sure you get the results you intended.
  • Make them aware that you appreciate them and their work.

    Delegating at work

Delegating tasks at work will reduce your workload, but it often times has benefits for the person you are delegating it to also. It provides the person with an opportunity to learn new things and gain experience that will help them boost their careers. It helps them feel like a part of the team and gives them a self-esteem boost when they are given greater responsibility in their job.

Reassure the person you are delegating to that you have confidence in them and make yourself available to any questions the person may have while performing the task.

Even if you are not a boss, there are people who will be willing to help if you are nice about it. There are tricks you can use if you are still unable to pass on any work but are still overloaded with tasks by your boss.

    Delegating at home

Family, chores, cooking, and cleaning are just a few of the tasks needed to be completed at home. If you work long hours, these tasks are the last thing you want to think about when you get home. Ask for help rather than struggle with mounds of chores. Enlisting the help of other family members will help trim down the workload on any one person if everyone chips in. For example, if you cook the meal, have someone else clean the dishes. If you do the laundry, have someone else vacuum the floor. If you have enough money, you can hire someone to come into your house and do a major cleaning once a month.

If you are recruiting the help of kids, have a fun colorful calendar on the fridge or a wall that lists who does what for that day. When a day has passed, cross it out so the kids always know which day it is. Younger kids can help clean their room and put away their toys, while older children can do more, like take out the trash and help do the dishes.
