Holiday Stress
Its time for the holidays! …and holiday stress?… Most likely you are feeling the stress of this time of year. Holidays can be a crazy time with all the activities that go along with them -- guests, parties, shopping, the list goes on and on. Some practical tips can help you minimize the stress you feel during these busy times.
Some of the main causes of stress during the holidays are: Family and relationships -- getting the whole family together can cause a lot of stress, whether it is preparing for all the company or the inevitable family conflicts that occur with the various personalities. On the other side of the spectrum if you are spending the holidays alone it can be an especially lonely time. Busy schedules -- all of the errands, cooking, shopping runs and chores that need to be done can ware you out and make you feel overwhelmed. Money -- gifts, food, travel all add up to large sum of money. Over spending can cause worry over whether you can afford all the gifts and items you spent your money on.
Tips to prevent holiday stress Plan ahead -- know what your schedule will be for each day. Make menus and schedules so you know what to cook, what to buy, and how guests will be kept busy. Be realistic -- not everything is going to be perfect, not everyone is going to get along, not everything is going to be the way you want it. Who cares! Relax! Enjoy the time. In the bigger scheme of things it is not going to matter and often times it make for good stories in the future. Have a budget and stick to it -- gifts and monetary items are not the most important thing in this life. Don’t put yourself in debt just to spend money on someone else. It’s the thought that counts. Don’t cause stress for months to come because you want to buy gifts. Get along -- not everyone is the same or perfect. That’s what makes things interesting. If you don’t agree with someone at least agree to disagree. You aren’t the only one feeling stressed, your relatives are most likely feeling the effects too. Shop early -- don’t wait until the last minute to finish all your shopping. There will be nothing left on the shelves and the crowds will be gargantuan. Ask for help --You don’t have to do everything yourself. Ask someone to help cook or clean. People are usually willing to pitch in. It’s not fair to have to do everything yourself. Take a break -- get away for a short time to relax. Take a walk to clear your mind. Get professional help if you need it -- if you are feeling depressed or unable to cope, seek the guidance of a doctor or other health professional. Enjoy! -- This is a time to enjoy not feel frazzled, so relax!
