Can stress be good? The answer is yes. There is a good kind of stress known as eustress. It's experienced when you believe your ability to cope with a situation is stronger than the demand. This means you believe that you can successfully deal with a stressor.


How is Good Stress Different?

The opposite of good stress is distress. While bad stress can cause you bad feelings, good stress allows you to get a boost to achieve what you are trying to do.

Good stress:

  • Allows you to take control of a situation
  • Gives you good feelings (eagerness, excitement, control, confidence)
  • Helps you achieve your goals
  • Helps you perform better

What Causes Good Stress?

I'm sure you can name a lot of things that cause bad stress, but what types of things cause good stress? Many different things can cause you to feel good stress. Here are some examples:

  • Amusement park rides
  • Horror movies
  • Adventures
  • Getting married
  • Having a baby
  • Buying a house
  • Tackling interesting tasks
  • Being creative and productive
  • Participating in sports
  • Anything that excites you in a good way

Good stress can help to improve your performance in these areas. Take participating in sports, for example, you are about to play in a huge game and you are pumped up with excitement. Or lets say you are about to give a big speech and you have butterflies in your stomach. This feeling can actually help you perform better.


Being excited is a good thing so be happy and realize that good stress is a good thing!
